2014 – 2016 Elected Officers of the Summit Republican City Committee
Chair – John Dougherty is a lifelong resident of Summit. He attended St. Teresa’s elementary school and Summit’s Junior High and High School. He holds a bachelor’s degree from SUNY at Buffalo and a master’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University. John is married twenty-seven years to his wife Patti and together they have four sons J.P., Aidan, Colm and Liam.
John recently completed a 28 year career with the Summit Police Department. He retired as the Captain of Police and is now the Director of Security at Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, NJ.
He previously served as the vice chair for administration of the Summit Republican City Committee, he has been serving for the last two years as a member of the Summit Planning Board and is the Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He has served on many municipal committees has been a volunteer for the Summit Jaycees, Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad, Police Athletic League, Summit Junior Baseball, Summit Area Red Cross and the Boy Scouts of America.
Vice Chair of Administration and Co-Parliamentarian Dorothy Burger
Enjoyed a thirty year career as an Editorial Administator and Premier Accounts Executive, Martindale- Hubbell, Inc., Summit and New Providence, NJ.
A long time Summit Resident, Dorothy is also the New Jersey Republican State Committeewoman for Union County. Serving on the Summit Rent Commission and the Board of Historic Preservation for the City of Summit.
Coordinator for Family Promise of Summit and Union County for 26 years, volunteering with Summit Area Red Cross and other organizations, and also served as former a Commissioner to the Summit Housing Authority appointed by Governor Don DiFrancesco.
Vice Chair of Finance– George Roma
George Roma has been a resident of Summit for almost 31 years. A native of New York City, George holds an undergraduate degree in Business and an MBA in Finance from St. John’s University. He also has received Executive Leadership training at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and Darden Business School, University of Virginia. George has extensive experience in Global Procurement, Financial Services and Compliance. His professional resume includes executive positions with Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase and Jones Lang LaSalle. George brings a wealth of experience to the Executive Committee. He has served for over 20 years as a Republican County Committeeman from Ward 1, District 3 and has previously served the Summit Republican City Committee as Co-Finance Chair. George also has volunteer service as a member of the Summit Rent Commission. He is also a member of the East Summit Association and has served on the Roosevelt Commons Board of Trustees for over 20 yrs, including two terms a Board President. George and his wife Kathy, a native of Boston are proud to call Summit home.
Treasurer– Dave Bomgaars relocated to Summit from Washington, D.C. in 1985 to continue his career with the Comptroller of the Currency as District Administrator in NYC for the Northeastern District. Prior to his retirement he served on the Summit Board of Education, and after retirement, on Common Council, serving 2010 and 2011 as President. Dave has previously served the Summit Republican City Committee as Vice Chair for Administration and Treasurer. He currently serves as the District Committeeman for Ward 2, District 7. Dave is a graduate of Iowa State University and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, Rutgers. His wife, Willa, is now retired from AT&T. His daughter Liz is a product of the Summit School system, and following graduate school, employed by the Chicago Jobs Council.
Assistant Treasurer- Joe Steiner
Communications– Lisa Allen has been able to call Summit her home since 2009. A Colorado native, she is married with two children, ages 8 & 10, and her oldest child attends Franklin Elementary. Prior to having children, Lisa lived in NYC with her husband and worked in Human Resources at JPMorgan Chase (JPMC). After leaving JPMC, she focused on raising her children, started her own photography business, and has been a citizen advocate for a bipartisan group No Labels. It was during this time that her political interest began to deepen. As a mom and concerned citizen, she became increasingly alarmed at the rising debt and partisan politics overtaking Washington DC.
Chair of Bylaws Committee – Dana Kane has been proud to call Summit her home and has been living in the same wonderful neighborhood since 2002. She and her husband Mike have three girls (ages 14, 11 and 8) in three Summit schools – Summit High School, LCJSMS, and Washington Elementary. Dana is a 1998 cum laude graduate of New York University School of Law but her heart belongs to her undergraduate alma mater, the University of Notre Dame, where she earned a B.S. in Mathematics, summa cum laude, in 1995. Professionally, Dana is Special Counsel in the Bankruptcy & Restructuring Group at Kelley Drye & Warren LLP. Outside of her workday as corporate restructuring lawyer and disgruntled NJ Transit commuter, Dana is a fitness enthusiast (who competes in triathlons just for the fun of it?) and girls’ coach with the Summit Lacrosse Club. She is thrilled to be working with her fantastic colleagues on the SRCC Executive Committee and hopes that more of her friends and neighbors get involved to make Summit even better than it already is.
Legal Counsel and Co-Parliamentarian – Peter B. Lijoi, Esq. is an attorney, licensed in New York and New Jersey, and holds a New Jersey tax assessor certificate. His career is focused on commercial, industrial and residential development, job creation and finance in the private, non-profit and public sectors. He worked as legal counsel and an acquisition executive for national public homebuilders. He serves as a Commissioner and President of the Union County Board of Taxation. Mr. Lijoi is leading a project surrounding business use of the Urban Enterprise Zone Tax Incentives as well as restructuring the Department of Community Affairs Information Technology Division. He has been a member of the Union County Republican Committee for over 20 years and has run for Sheriff and Surrogate. Active in Community Service he served as President of the Washington School PTA, Summit Soccer Club and was a member of the facilities committee that renovated and expanded Summits Public School buildings including Summit High School. Married to Christine C. Lijoi for 34 years, he has two sons who were born and raised in Summit and attended the Summit Public Schools and are now working and living in New York City.
Secretary– Bernedette Yeager
Assistant Secretary – Caroline Lindabury was born and raised in Summit. She attended Franklin Elementary School, Summit Junior High and Summit High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pa. after which she taught elementary school for six years in Westfield and New Providence.
Caroline has been a long-time Summit volunteer starting when she joined the Franklin School PTO, the school her children attended. She served as President of the PTO from 1997-1979. She also was an active volunteer at Summit Middle and High Schools. After being a Brownie Leader for one year and a Girl Scout Leader for three years, Caroline became a trainer for new Brownie Leaders for seven years. Caroline is a Sustaining member of the Junior League of Summit and served for one year as the Sustainer Chair. As an Active member of the JLS she served as Ways and Means Chair and Corresponding Secretary. In 1991 Caroline received the Junior League’s Presidents Award.
Formerly a member of the Board of Trustees of SAGE, now known as Sage eldercare, Caroline served as Secretary and Board President for three years. In 1992-93 Caroline was awarded the United Way Volunteer Service Award and in 2001 was the recipient of the Summit Good Scout Award from the Patriots’ Path Council, Boy Scouts of America.
In 1994 Caroline was appointed to the Summit Municipal Alliance Against Substance Abuse serving as Chair for six years. Currently Caroline serves on the Boards of Shaping Summit Together and SADC (Summit Area Development Corporation).Caroline enjoys playing golf, bridge and keeping up with her six grandchildren.
Union County Delegate – Andy Smith is an attorney who runs his own law practice, Smith + Schwartzstein, in Morristown. Andy is currently the Vice Chairman (Finance) for the Republican Committee of Union County, and was the Vice Chairman (Admin.) for the Summit Republican City Committee from 2007-2009. Andy ran for Union County Freeholder in 2011, and his other civic activities include the Summit Health Board, Adjutant General of American Legion Post #322, and co-chairman of the 2012 Summit Memorial Day Parade. Prior to starting his own law practice, Andy was an attorney at the law firm Gibbons, P.C. and clerked for The Honorable Sybil R. Moses, A.J.S.C. Before attending law school at Boston College Law School, Andy spent four years in the United States Army, rising to the rank of Captain and serving overseas in Bosnia and Korea. Andy and his wife Kathryn live in Summit with their three children Gavin, Charlotte and Matthew.
